5 Things You MUST Know Before Launching a New Website

1. A Website Without a Traffic Strategy Is a Waste of Money

One of the most common mistakes made by business owners when paying for a new website is, they think that potential customers will automatically be able to find their website once it goes live. The harsh reality is, if you don’t have some sort of plan to drive traffic to your site, it is virtually worthless. The internet is an endless void of lost and forgotten websites that never established any source of traffic and you don’t want to pay hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars just to add your site to that ever-growing void.

With that being said, a website with a plan to drive traffic can (and should) become your businesses’ greatest source of revenue.

Traffic can come from many places:

• Ads

• Search Engines (like Google)

• Social Media Channels

• Personal Efforts (business cards, signs, etc.)

• Guest Posting on Blogs

• + More

It is important to make plans to build a consistent traffic strategy that can keep your website relevant. If you don’t have the time or know-how, I recommend hiring somebody to generate website traffic for you.

Many digital marketing agencies and consultants can build your new site and offer a traffic solution in one, effective package. This is often the best solution as a knowledge of your website and how it was built will help in optimizing it to get more traffic.

Note: Be sure you are ready to invest in a traffic strategy within the first few months of your new website. This is something that you should implement as soon as possible so make sure you have enough money to invest in the success of your new site – even if it’s just a small amount at first.

2. Your New Website MUST Have a Content Management System (CMS)

A content management system is THE MOST IMPORTANT feature of any business website. CMS allows you to quickly and easily update your website without having to call your website designer every time you need something changed or added. You would be shocked at how often I meet business owners who paid for a “discounted” website only to find out that it costed them hundreds of dollars every time they wanted to make any changes to it. Not only that, but they would have to wait days for these changes to be made.

Don’t get talked into a cheap, stagnant website that can never be updated. A website is a living organism that needs new content, fresh updated, and constant care. Without CMS, your website (and your business) won’t stand a chance.

3. Do NOT Hire a Web “Designer”

Now this is a tough topic for me to talk about as I started out as a web designer. Web designers have a great eye for what looks “good”. Unfortunately, they don’t always have an eye for what generates leads and drives revenue. If you are building a website for a personal project or just for fun, I highly recommend a designer. Otherwise, you are going to want to look for something


Think of it this way, your website should be your #1 sales person and should be generating business for you 24/7. Would you entrust the training of your best sales person to a designer?

Absolutely not…

Find someone that understands sales and conversions just as much as web design and development. This will give your website the best chance to do what it was built to do…. Make you money!

4. A Good Website Is an Investment, Not an Expense

Many web designers want you to think that a website is a cost rather than an investment. They attempt to sell you on the overall beauty of a website instead of the results it should be getting.

Oftentimes you may be drawn in by offers for “cheap website design only $299”. The reason they try to dazzle you with low prices is they know that their websites are nothing but a cost to your business because they are afraid to guarantee any sort of results. For this reason, they must drop prices to remain relevant.

It’s important for you to understand that your website should be the main salesman of your business. Paying and training a good sales person is not a cost but an investment. If you can give that salesman the tools he or she needs, they will make you far more money in the long run than you ever had to spend on them in the first place.

So, when looking for a website, don’t ever go for the cheapest. Look for a team or consultant that can create a sales-driven website that will actually perform. Once you find the right fit, invest real money into a website that will 100x your investment.

5. It Takes Work on Your Part - But It’s Worth It

No one knows your business (or your customers) better than you. It might be easy to think that once you pay for a new website you can sit back until the site is finished. This just isn’t the case. You should be working closely with your web consultant to create content and a user experience that potential customers need to have when they land on your website. If your web designer claims that they can “handle it all” and don’t need anything from you, this is cause for concern. It will require time and effort on your part to help flesh out the important details and offers of your business so that your consultant can help achieve your vision.

Final Thoughts

All of that being said, one of the most important parts of this decision is choosing a web consultant that you can trust. Check references, ask to see results, and share your vision with all potential consultants to make sure you can get the most out of your new website. Your business is unique, and your website should be too.
